Basic Medical Techniques
| Jaw Thrust | Stand sit or kneel based on what is comfortable for you. Place both hands on the persons lower jaw so that your thumbs are over the chin and lower fingers are along the lower angle of the jaw. Gently move the lower jaw forward to open the Airway. Attempt to do this without moving the neck. If the mouth is closed open it by moving the lower lip. |
| Mouth To Mouth Resuscitation | Giving breaths ever 3 seconds in children and every 5 seconds in adults. This should allow for aproximately 12 - 20 breaths per minute. |
| Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation | The process of moving blood through the body manually when a heart is not beating. On your knees at the side of the patient use your hands to press down on the chest just above the notch of the sternum. Breath 2 breaths and check the caroted pulse, if there is none proceed. Press 15 times and give two breaths and repeat. Timing should be about four of the cycles for a minute. |
| Direct Pressure To Stop Bleeding | Press directly against the bleeding site. Use a dressing about an inch thick of gauss about 4 inches by 4 inches. Press firmly and wait for few minutes, if the bleeding goes through gauss apply another (do not remove the original!). If the bleeding does not stop use Indirect Pressure. |
| Indirect Pressure To Stop Bleeding | Find the artery that feeds into the extremity and press on it. In the arm you can press on the inside of the arm between the muscle and the bone. On the leg you can press on the artery near the groin. (The best way to find it is by pressing on your self and try to find the pulse (: ) Incidentally I wouldn't suggest doing this for the head. Though it makes for a good self defense move if you can do it. And is also the premise for the 'Vulcan Death Pinch' If nothing seams to work move on to using a tourniquet. |
| Tourniquet | A peace of any flexible material that cane be used to rap around the leg (without damaging tissues) to cut off the blood flow. Rap around the leg two to three times and tie around a length of something i.e. stick, pen, pencil, whatever. |
| Notes on Bleeding | Although the above three means of stopping bleeding are very good they dont offer much help for some of the more difficult places were bleeding occures. These are the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. You can try to use direct preasure however there is only so far this will go depending on severity of injury. Surgury may be necessary but if you cannot perform surgury were you are somethings you might have to do are 'wrap to go'. That is you wrap the head or the chest or the abdomen so as to prevent bleeding and transport as soon as possible. If you are skilled and it's an arterial bleed clamp. Clamping is just taking a tool and squeezing the artery. You may have to clamp anyway because they will die quickly from this, especially if it is a main artery. After you wrap maintain IV therapy and keep checking blood preasure. When the blood preasure drops you know they are bleeding. This also causes the heart to beat faster because it is trying hard to maintain good blood preasures. |
| IV Treatment | The process of Introducing substances directly into the veins. Generally these substances include saline, blood, or drugs. |
| Inline Stabilization | The process of keeping the back and neck in a stable and natural position so as not to cause further damage to the Spinal Cord. To do this place to hands on the patient as soon as you have contact with them. (if it is trauma patient). Place a color around the neck by sliding one half under the neck and the second part over. Roll the patient using as many people as possible. Usually three are enough. Have a fourth person slide the board to the patient. Roll the patient on the board. Remember the person holding the neck inline calls the numbers 1, 2, 3, roll. |
