Advanced Medical Techniques
| Chest Decompression | If the chest has air or blood in the cavity surrounding the lung there may be a large amount of pressure that is building up. By listening to the lungs you can discern weather or not this is happening. If it is happening an emergency technique is to place a needle between the second and third rib. If you made a mistake and there was nothing wrong with the lung you will have collapsed it by doing this. Don't worry too much though. A collapsed lung is better than dying from complications that occur from this occurrence. |
| Inter Cranial Decompression | I wouldn't suggest this in a field environment. (the doctors I've spoken with wouldn't want to either but I figure this is Star Trek right so we can do anything we want.) Drill a whole in the head. Using a special drill. The drill basically stops once it is through the skull. |
| Aortic Clamp | If their is not a high enough blood pressure and the heart has stopped you may want to open the chest and put a clamp on the Aorta. This will make the heart pump to the lungs and brain which may sustain life if the patient has not already lost too much blood and are moved to surgery. |
| Tracheotomy | Cut a line in the hollow of the throat and poke a tube through. This will create an artificial air way. You'll know it's right because the airway will close around the tube. |
| Surgical Cricoids Airway | Place a needle between the Adams apple and the cartilage ring just below it. |
